In 2017, Patterson donated a record $350,000 to bookstore employees in 2016, $250,000 to 149 independent bookstore employees across the country and in 2015, $250,000 to 87 recipients. And through his continued funding of holiday bonuses for booksellers he is again demonstrating his earnest commitment to literacy and putting the right book into the hands of young readers. ABA CEO Oren Teicher said, “James Patterson’s extraordinary support of independent booksellers and their work has been generous and sustained. Patterson partnered with the American Booksellers Association to distribute the funds to a record number of booksellers each winning bookseller was given $750. “Booksellers make a difference in people’s lives every day, and I’m happy to make even a small difference in theirs by giving them a little something more this holiday season.” Along the way, I’ve spoken to booksellers who’ve used bonuses to do the things that many of us take for granted - go to the dentist, repair a car, or even buy their family Christmas gifts,” said Patterson. “2018 marks the fifth year I’ve done this Bookseller Bonus program with the ABA. Customers, booksellers, publishing industry colleagues, and others were invited to nominate a bookseller by answering the grant application’s one question: “Why does this bookseller deserve a holiday bonus?” Booksellers were praised for their perseverance in the face of hardship, contagious enthusiasm, hand-selling, innovation, and their dedication to books and reading. Over the past several months, more than 1,000 booksellers were nominated to receive bonuses, and Patterson personally selected winners from bookstores all across the country. On Tuesday, December 18, James Patterson announced the names of 333 independent booksellers receiving grants totaling $250,000 as part of his 2018 Holiday Bookstore Bonus Program, which gives independent bookstore employees a bit of extra money for the holiday season.
